Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease where the skin becomes itchy, red, thick and scaly. It occurs most often on the scalp, knees, elbows and back. It can range from extremely mild to very severe, covering large areas of the body. It is not contagious, but does appear to run in families. Four to five million people in the United States are affected.
Psoriasis is thought to be caused by a reaction in the white cells of the blood that causes an inflammation in the skin. The skin then sheds itself too quickly. There are many types of this disease depending on where on the body it occurs, and what type of scales form. Psoriasis can also occur on the nails where it manifests itself as crumbly or smudged nails, sometimes with pits in them.
