How does a person know they have dry skin? Dry skin is skin that doesn’t hold on to moisture very well. The result is skin that’s delicate and prone to flaking and fine, visible lines, especially in the brow and around the eyes. There may be red or dry patches, especially on the cheeks and at the hairline. Because dry skin is not as elastic as normal skin, there can also be puffiness around the eyes. People with dry skin may also notice that their skin itches or is too tight after they wash it.
Gentleness is the word when it comes to caring for dry skin. The person should use a cleanser that doesn’t have alcohol or fragrance, since these chemicals can make dry skin even more dry. Even fruit acids and retinoids that can be used safely by people with other types of skin might be too drying.
People with dry skin should rinse their face with lots of lukewarm, but not hot, water. Hot water takes away whatever oils are in the skin that help lock in water. They should gently exfoliate the skin once a week but should not use sugar or salt scrubs to do so. Oatmeal is a much better type of scrub for exfoliation and won’t stress the skin as much. Loofahs should be avoided. When they’re finished washing and rising their skin, they should gently dry it by patting it.
The skin should be moisturized immediately after it is washed. Don’t be afraid of creams and ointments, especially if they have a vegetable oil base. A very good choice for a quick moisturizer is virgin coconut oil. It helps keep water in the skin and calms inflammation. Moisturize the skin several times a day. SkinMedica® is a good medical-grade skin care line offered by Hubbell Dermatology & Aesthetics that is great for dry skin.
Avoid going out in cold, dry weather or put on mufflers, gloves and hats when they do to expose as little of their skin as possible. A humidifier in the room also helps to hydrate the skin as long as the room temperature doesn’t get too high. They should wear natural fabrics as often as possible, and avoid any textile that irritates the skin.
