We have long known that UVA, UVB and Infrared light can cause significant skin damage. Unprotected exposure to these “invisible attackers” is often the source of dark spots, wrinkles, dull skin and loss of elasticity. We have been schooled in ways to avoid skin damage: stay out of direct sunlight, wear SPF greater than 30 and clothing designed to block the sun. Recent studies have uncovered other “silent agers”: pollution and high energy light or Blue Light. Pollution and blue light make free radicals which causes oxidation stress and accelerates the skin aging process.
Where does blue light come from? Recent studies have shown that Blue Light comes from cell phones, tablets, computers, fluorescent bulbs, and the sun. More alarming, blue light penetrates the skin deeper than UVA and UVB rays. Recent studies on blue light show that reducing screen time is the most effective way to stay out of harm’s way. In the age of “selfies”, avoiding cell phones, tablets, computers, Instagram and Facebook is hard to do! Most adults clock in 10 or more hours of daily screen time.
Since going offline in a digital driven world is not an option, here are a few “Hubbell Hints” on how to leave Blue Light in the dark.
Newer model tablets and smart phones come equipped with features to track screen time and turn off the Blue Light in the evening. Commonly referred to as “night mode,” this health-conscious setting allows mobile users to adjust screen brightness to a less harsh, yellow-hued display.
Leading innovators in skin care are beginning to join the fight against tech toxins. We now have new revolutionary systems designed to defend the skin against light and environmental pollution during the day and recharge and renew the skin at night. If skin isn’t your primary concern, beware that blue light can disrupt the production of melatonin (an important sleep hormone) as well as worsen one’s eyesight.
From built in device settings to skin care that does more than meets the eye, it is now possible to preserve a youthful appearance. We can get ahead of the aging curve and achieve beautiful skin that you want to reach out and touch! A Board-Certified Skin Expert can offer additional hints on how to prevent aging acceleration without going off the grid.
