Most everyone wants to improve the health and appearance of their skin- we only have one, after all! Modern skincare science has given us beautifully formulated products and treatments for anti-aging, texture, pigmentation, and more! But what is the point of these preventative and corrective services and products if we don’t know how to properly prepare our skin for them? Well, it all starts with having a clean slate! Not properly cleansing your skin can lead to many issues. Not only are you not cleaning off the oil, dirt, pollution, and makeup from your skin that can cause breakouts and damage, you’re also not properly preparing your skin to absorb good ingredients from products you apply afterwards. If we don’t properly cleanse, we are rendering the (potentially premium) products we use afterwards, useless- and who wants to throw away money?! Follow these “double cleansing” quick steps to give your skin the fresh start it deserves!
Step 1: Remove that makeup, pollution, excess oil and grime! You may think washing your makeup off with your everyday cleanser removes it, but newsflash- most of the time, it doesn’t! Makeup is formulated to stay on the skin, and some formulas are even sweat-proof and waterproof. Mascara, sunscreen, and eye makeup can be particularly tricky to remove without a dedicated makeup remover or a cleanser specifically formulated for its removal. Also, use a wash cloth or facial cleansing device and not just your bare hands!
Step 2: Cleanse! After you remove your makeup, your skin is ready for a cleanser. Opt for one that works best with your skin type and leaves you feeling clean but not stripped. These cleansers can come in the form of creams, foams or gels, as well as the occasional exfoliating cleanser. We always recommend talking to a dermatologist to find out what cleanser is most effective for you and your specific skin type (yes, the right cleanser REALLY DOES matter!) Another important tip: when washing your face, make sure the water is cool to lukewarm, not hot! Water that is too hot can contribute to broken capillaries and excessive redness.
After you are nice and clean, you’re ready to apply your treatment products! Never go to bed without cleansing your face, and cleanse again when you wake up in the morning. Your face (and wallet) will thank you!
